As of 2015, tthe United States offers a government rebate only for heat pumps powered by geothermal energy. This rebate is part of the Residential Renewable Energy Tax Credit which was established as a Jan. 1, 2008, expansion of the Energy Policy Act of 2005.
This rebate is only available for geothermal heat pumps installed in residential buildings and is available until Dec. 31, 2016. Other residential systems covered by this program include wind and solar fuel cells. When the act was initially passed in 2005, the rebate only covered energy-related appliances powered by solar energy, such as water heating and electric systems.
