Are grapes berries?

Botanists define all grapes as berries, including red, green and black table grapes. The botanical definition of a berry is a fleshy fruit grown from one flower with one ovary.
The grape is part of the berry genus Vitis, which includes a wide variety of grapes throughout the world. In North America vines within the genus evolved over the centuries into the species V. Labrusca, or "fox grape." The concord grape is among this species. About 6,000 years ago, once human beings discovered that grapes were capable of fermenting, they began cultivating the fruit, which led to the establishment of vineyards and the practice of grafting vines.
