Do groundhogs eat during the winter?

Groundhogs do not eat anything during the winter and live off their fat stores while they hibernate. They spend their summer months gaining as much body fat as possible to sustain up to 150 days of winter hibernation.
Groundhogs, also known as woodchucks, are rodents closely related to squirrels. Their range extends across southern Canada and south into the eastern areas of the United States as far as central Georgia. When they are not hibernating, they eat grass, vegetables and some insects. Groundhogs are best known in the United States for the yearly tradition where Punxsutawney Phil is pulled out of his burrow and predicts the end of winter.
