Growing a bird of paradise from seed is a long-term project that requires seed preparation and the right growing conditions. It takes anywhere from four to 10 years for a seed-grown bird of paradise to bloom.
Start with a fresh seed that is no more than six months old. Carefully file the hard exterior seed coat to break the surface and then plant it one inch deep in high quality growing soil. Cover the seed pot loosely with plastic wrap and place it in a warm location out of direct sunlight. Keep the soil moist. Germination should occur within 12 weeks.
Replant the seedling into a permanent pot when it to a height of two inches. Bird of paradise plants thrive in direct sunlight.
