Is gymnastics a sport?

Gymnastics is a competitive sport that involves leaps, flips and other acrobatics on various pieces of equipment. The ancient Greeks participated in gymnastics as a sport, and the first modern Olympics in 1896 included it.

The various types of gymnastics include artistic, rhythmic, trampoline, tumbling and group. Artistic gymnastics is perhaps the most well-known. In this type, men and women compete against their own gender on the uneven bars and other devices.

Gymnasts must have a sense of flair, drama and balance. They must be strong, disciplined and have a dedicated work ethic. Olympic gymnastic competitions come in team competitions, all-around events and individual events.
