Is H2S polar or nonpolar?
By Forinfos - 08/11/2025 - 0 comments
H2S, also known as hydrogen sulfide, is regarded as a polar molecule based on the arrangement of the hydrogen atoms around the sulfur atom and each atom's characteristics. The sulfur atom is more electronegative than the hydrogen atoms, and the bonds between the sulfur and hydrogen atoms are drawn to the sulfur atom.
Although the bonds between the sulfur and hydrogen atoms contain their own polarity, this is not enough to cancel the polarity of the sulfur atom, and nor do the bonds cancel out their own polarities. There is a net molecular dipole of 0.97 debyes that causes other atoms to be attracted to the molecules.
