George Strait's daughter, Jennifer Strait, died at the age of 13 in a car crash in San Marcos, Texas, in 1986. Jennifer was in the passenger seat when the driver, William Allen McDonald, failed to safely avoid a ditch, causing the car to roll over.

McDonald, age 16 at the time of the accident, was freed on a $2,000 bond after passing a breathalyzer test confirming a lack of alcohol in his system. Investigators determined that excessive speed caused the crash, and the police charged McDonald with criminally negligent homicide. McDonald was unhurt by the accident, though neither he nor Jennifer were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.
