What happens after you fill out the online application for Social Security?

After someone applies for Social Security benefits online, the Social Security Administration reviews the application. The agency contacts the applicant if more information is needed, or if it needs to see any documents from the applicant.

The Social Security Administration will contact an online applicant if he is eligible for benefits based on the work record of his spouse, or if any family members are eligible for benefits based on the applicant's work record. After processing the application, the SSA will respond by mail. It is also possible to apply for Social Security benefits in person at an SSA office, or over the phone.
