What happens to an unclaimed body?

According to the Daily News Journal, if a body is not claimed by family members or friends it is the counties' legal responsibility to find a burial spot for the body.
Some states have passed bills allowing the bodies to be cremated, says the Daily News Journal, which costs much less than a regular burial. Homeless people who pass on are the most common of the unclaimed bodies and most of them don't receive proper burials for many months after death, according to NPR News. Most of these bodies are not priority due to a lack of extra funds within the states responsible.
