What is HDR photography?

High dynamic range, or HDR, photography is created through the use of special editing software to layer several photos together of the same image taken at different exposure levels. The goal is to produce a single photo that contains added detail and quality.
HDR photos require the use of a tripod and varying camera settings in each originating photo to stabilize the images and manipulate the amount of light that is let in through the camera lens. The photos range from dark to light as a camera's aperture and shutter speed are adjusted, and once combined, the final HDR photo represents a truer version of an image according to what the human eye can decipher.
