An IVIG infusion, or intravenous immunoglobulin infusion, is a procedure in which antibodies from a healthy donor are injected into the blood of a patient with a compromised immune system, according to Mount Sinai Hospital. Antibodies are combined with a sterile solution and delivered through an intravenous needle.
IVIG infusion is used to treat autoimmune diseases, immunodeficiency, inflammatory diseases and other diseases that lead to a weakened immune system. The procedure lasts approximately five to six hours, and improvement in symptoms may be seen within one to two days or take three to four weeks, as reported by Mount Sinai Hospital.
