What is IV infusion therapy?

IV infusion therapy is when medication is given through a needle or a catheter, notes National Home Infusion Association. This type of therapy can also be given through intramuscular injections or through the membranes around the spinal cord.

Some common conditions that require IV infusion therapy include infections that don't respond to oral antibiotics, cancer and cancer-related pain, Crohn's Disease, multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis, according to National Home Infusion Association. These types of infusions are often performed in a patient's home because the cost of inpatient care is too expensive and interferes with the patient's life. A state-licensed pharmacy provides the correct medication as prescribed by a doctor, and a nurse administers the therapy in the patient's home or other site.
