What is a Kegel?

Mayo Clinic reports that a Kegel, or Kegel exercise, is an exercise that strengthens the muscles of the pelvic floor. Both women and men can do Kegel exercises to improve bladder control and help prevent other pelvic floor muscle issues.
Mayo Clinic identifies the pelvic floor muscles as those used to stop urination mid-stream. Perform a Kegel exercise by contracting these muscles. Hold the contraction for 5 to 10 seconds, then rest for 5 seconds. Repeat the contraction at least five times. Work up to doing 10 contractions for 10 seconds each three times per day. Breathe normally, and try not to contract the abdominal, buttock or thigh muscles during the Kegel exercise.
