To make a homemade protein shake for weight loss, one can combine whey or soy protein powder with coconut or almond milk. After combined, the mixture should be added to a blender and liquefied to a desired consistency.

If weight loss is the goal, the shake must consist of 50 percent protein. Whey and casein, both dairy products, are the top choices for protein in weight-loss shakes. Soy, a plant-based protein, is also effective if dairy isn't well-tolerated or if allergies are an issue.

Fruits, such as blueberries and strawberries, add fiber and help to satiate the appetite.

Adding low-fat yogurt to the mix offers addition protein which provides an additional boost to the metabolism; the body works harder to burn protein than it does carbohydrates. Fruit is not the only choice: adding dark, leafy greens, such as kale, takes advantage of the benefits of Vitamins A, C and K.

For a thicker shake, one can add slightly less liquid. For a smoother consistency, banana and a bit of unsweetened apple juice can be pureed for 60 to 90 seconds.

For natural sugar sources, stevia can be used. Stevia is a natural, unrefined plant that adds sweetness without adding calories. Agave syrup in moderation is another excellent choice, or 1 teaspoon of unprocessed Dutch cocoa powder provides an extra twist.
