There are no known side effects of Beano; however, a rare sensitivity can occur in some people, and if that happens, they should discontinue use of the product immediately, states Drugs.com. The active ingredient in Beano is alpha-d-galactosidase, which derives from a safe, food-grade mold.
Beano works by using an enzyme to help break down complex carbohydrates in food that cause discomfort and excess gas, states the Beano website. Consumers should take two to three tablets before consuming a meal with problem foods, such as broccoli, carrots, lettuce and peppers. Beano also helps the body digest beans, peanuts and whole grains.
