What is wet macular degeneration?

Wet macular degeneration is an age-related disease of the eye that leads to central vision loss, according to Mayo Clinic. This is caused by blood vessels leaking into the macula, which is the tissue inside the center of the retina.

Wet macular degeneration is more severe, quicker progressing and less common than dry macular degeneration, though the cause is unknown, says Mayo Clinic. In affected patients, the disorder presents as dark spots in the central vision due to blood leakage, which may progress into straight lines appearing wavy. Patients at high risk should have regular eye exams, as early symptoms are not always apparent.
