What is a healthy diet plan?

A healthy diet consists of eating low-fat, low-calorie foods that include choices from each of the major food groups. This means eating fruits, vegetables, whole grains, proteins and dairy products. It is important to limit the consumption of processed foods when trying to make healthy choices.
For fruits and vegetables, eating a variety of colors and types is the best way to get all the nutrients needed. At least half of the grains consumed daily should be whole grain choices. Lean proteins such as nuts, beans, fish, white-meat chicken and egg whites are the best options. Low-fat, but not fat-free, dairy options, such as 2 percent milk, are ideal.
