Homeowners can safely run heating cables through a home's gutters in order to prevent ice dams from occurring. However, ice dams are a sign that the house has a ventilation problem, and the best possible solution is to fix this ventilation problem to prevent ice dams.
Ice dams occur because the warmth within an attic area escapes, melting the snow and ice on a roof. This melted snow then refreezes, forming ice dams. Ice dams can lead to numerous problems for a home, including the growth of mold. It can also strain a home's HVAC system and lead to higher energy bills.
