According to the Centers for Disease Control, hepatitis B is transmitted by the passage of body fluids, semen or blood of infected individuals into the bloodstreams of non-infected individuals via sexual intercourse and shared items, such as toothbrushes and syringes. The virus can also be passed to infants during childbirth.

Mayo Clinic explains that it is imperative for individuals with recent exposures to hepatitis B to seek immediate medical attention as there are treatments available that may help to eradicate the virus when utilized within 24 hours of potential exposure. Symptoms of hepatitis B can include nausea, joint discomfort, fever, yellow skin and stomach pain.
