Studies indicate some herbs help lower cholesterol, including artichoke leaf extract, fenugreek seeds and leaves, holy basil and yarrow, according to WebMD. Barley, apples, psyllium seeds and flaxseed meal reduce low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and overall cholesterol levels effectively. Pecans, almonds, walnuts and pistachio nuts also lower cholesterol.

Garlic extract may reduce triglycerides, LDL and total cholesterol, and green tea extract may lower LDL cholesterol, according to Mayo Clinic. Side effects include diarrhea, nausea, gas and vomiting, and the extracts may interact with warfarin and other anticoagulants. Studies of turmeric, ginger and rosemary are underway to determine whether they are beneficial for preventing heart disease, notes WebMD.
