According to Drugs.com, ferritin is a protein used to store iron inside the body for future use. A ferritin test measures the amount of ferritin in blood. High levels of this protein can signify medical conditions such as alcoholic liver disease or having too much iron in the body.
Drugs.com further mentions that the level of ferritin in the blood that is considered normal varies according to gender. For males, it is between 12 and 300 nanograms per milliliter, while for females it is between 12 and 150 nanograms per milliliter. Lower levels than these values can be caused by heavy menstrual bleeding, poor absorption of iron in the intestine or iron deficiency anemia.
