What is a high PSA result?

There is no normal or abnormal level of prostate-specific antigen, or PSA, in the blood, according to the National Cancer Institute. Historically, doctors consider levels of 4 nanograms per milliliter of blood to be normal.

Recent studies have found prostate cancer in men with PSA rates lower than 4 nanograms per milliliter, and many men with higher rates do not have prostate cancer, states the National Cancer Institute. PSA levels fluctuate for a variety of reasons, including prostatitis or a urinary tract infection. If a man without symptoms is found to have a high PSA level, the doctor may recommend a second test to verify the results. If the doctor suspects prostate cancer, he may recommend a prostate biopsy.
