As of 2015, the ZIP codes with the highest crime rates in the United States almost all have a rate of more than 70 violent crimes per 1,000 residents. People who live in these neighborhoods have between a one-in-seven and one-in-15 chance of being the victim of a crime.
All of the neighborhoods with the highest crime rates are located in dense urban areas. Four of the top 10 are in Detroit, Michigan, including the most dangerous ZIP code. These statistics take into account only instances of violent crime, such as murder and assault, leaving out instances of property crime, such as burglary.
