Hannibal brought elephants to the Alps. Hannibal crossed the Rhône River to reach the Alps and brought his elephants across by using a raft covered with earth in order to fool the elephants into thinking they were still standing on land.

Hannibal encountered much opposition while crossing the Alps not only from nature itself but also from local tribes who fought him and his men. Most of Hannibal's elephants died while Hannibal and his men were crossing the Alps. By the time he reached northern Italy, only around 24 of the elephants were still alive along with 26,000 of the men.
