How did nationalism affect the Austrian Empire?

Created in 1804, the Austrian Empire was a multinational empire that encompassed Germans, Czechs and Hungarians, along with other minorities and as a result tensions appeared between these groups. Most frequently, the tensions were related to the way the Austrian Empire was governed and the attitude of the government towards the rights of the individual nationalities.

Nationalism appeared in the Austrian Empire as a counteraction to the reactionary force of the Emperor. The members of the different nations that formed the Empire believed that self-governing was the best choice and this led to the revolutions in 1848, which remained in history as the Year of the Revolutions.
