German engineer and scientist Carl von Linde invented the deep freezer in 1876. Linde invented the refrigeration process based upon his work with the continuous liquification of large amount of gases.

Linde's research from 1873 to 1877 at the Polytechnic University in Munich resulted in the first stable and efficient compressed-ammonia refrigerator. Linde established his own company, Linde Air Products, which promoted his invention. After it became internationally renowned, refrigeration became a major tool in food storage and industrial processing. Linde received three honorary Doctorates and the Bavarian crown achievement medal, among other honors over the course of his lifetime.
