As of 2014, the last president of the United States with a beard was Benjamin Harrison. His presidency lasted from 1889 to 1893. Before him, four other presidents wore beards.
The first president to wear a full beard was Abraham Lincoln, who grew his facial hair at the behest of an 11-year-old girl named Grace Bedell, who said that his chances of getting elected would be higher if he grew a beard. His presidency lasted from 1861 to 1865. After him, Ulysses S. Grant, who served from 1869 to 1877; Rutherford B. Hayes, who served from 1877 to 1881; and James A. Garfield, who served in 1881, all had beards.
