The Manhattan Project was carried out in approximately 30 different secret locations, but the three chief sites of production were located in Hanford, Wash., Oak Ridge, Tenn., and Los Alamos, N.M. The first atomic bombs were constructed at the Los Alamos, N.M., location.
Initial research for the Manhattan Project took place at a few universities, including the University of California at Berkeley, Columbia University and the University of Chicago. After Enrico Fermi and other scientists successfully staged the first controlled nuclear reaction in 1942, the project eventually moved to the main production facility in Los Alamos. By June 1944, at the peak of construction and production of the facilities, the Manhattan Project employed approximately 129,000 people.
