The president before Dwight Eisenhower was Harry S. Truman, 33rd president of the United States. Truman was sworn in, after the sudden death of president Franklin Delano Roosevelt.
President Truman was sworn in as U.S president, on April 12, 1945, 82 days after taking the oath of office of the vice president. He lacked experience in foreign policy, so his main goal was to put an end to World War II. In the initial 6 months of his administration, Truman declared the surrender of Germany and dropped the atomic bomb on Nagasaki and Hiroshima, bringing an end to the World War II. He later signed the charter that enacted the United Nations.
