The purpose of the British Declaratory Act of 1766 was to appease colonists by repealing the Stamp Act, save face and end the boycotts on trade. The act stated that the taxing authority of the British Parliament was the same in America as it was in Great Britain.

Though it seemed to be an act of appeasement, the Declaratory Act actually asserted the complete authority of Parliament over the colonies by making laws and statutes passed by the British Parliament binding on the people of America "in all cases whatsoever." It was almost a direct copy of the Irish Declaratory Act that had placed Ireland in a position of bondage to the crown.
