Woodrow Wilson's re-election slogan, "He kept us out of the war," helped him to win the 1916 election. Wilson had been criticized by his opponent, Charles Evans Hughes, for not being prepared to enter World War I.
Wilson ran as the anti-war candidate. Most Americans sided with the British, but they did not want to get involved in the war. In 1917, Wilson had no choice but to enter the war.
Germany's campaign in the war was considered aggressive, which prompted an American response. However, the election was over and Wilson had successfully become the first Democratic candidate to win consecutive terms since Andrew Jackson's re-election.
