What was the Transcontinental Treaty of 1819?

The Transcontinental Treaty of 1819 was a treaty between Spain and the United States that provided boundary lines between New Spain and the United States as well as gave the state of Florida to the United States. The treaty was also referred to as the Adams-Onis Treaty because it was signed into action by Onis, the Spanish foreign minister, and John Quincy Adams, the United States' Secretary of State.

The treaty also provided Spain with areas of Texas, California, Utah, Nevada, Wyoming, Colorado and Arizona. The treaty would not be ratified until 1831 by the United States. Spain was forced to bargain with the United States and create the treaty in order to avoid losing Florida without any land gains.
