Tutankhamun became king of Egypt in 1332 BC, at the age of nine. He succeeded his father, the heretical King Akhenaten, and brought an end to the Amarna Period of Egyptian history.
At the time of Tutankhamun's ascent to the throne, Egypt was in the grip of his father's experiment with monotheism. Tutankhamun's first capital, Amarna, was the seat of this religious deviation, and it fell to him to move the capital back to Thebes. Tutankhamun appears to have suffered from poor health, and his reign was short. He died with a badly infected fracture to his right knee in 1323 BC, at the age of 19.
