What is Hmong music?

Hmong music is the traditional music of the Hmong People. Hmong people are native to Southeast Asia and originated in China’s Yellow River region around 2700 B.C. Dra, nblaw, ncas, raj and qeej are some popular Hmong music instruments.

Hmong music is an important part of the lives of Hmong people. It is played at weddings, at funerals, for entertainment and for guests. Hmong music and Hmong language are deeply connected, as the language is tonal. Melodies in Hmong music are built based on the relationship between the musical pitches and the pitch of words.

Hmong music has not been popular with the younger generation, but it is now starting to change with the rise solo Hmong artists and bands.
