Who invented the word jumble?

The Jumble word puzzle was created by comic book artist Martin Naydel in 1954. The game, which was originally called Scramble, is now officially called Jumble, That Scrambled Word Game.

A Jumble word puzzle includes a clue, a drawing and four anagrams. The drawing always contains a hint about the answer. The puzzle is solved by unscrambling the anagrams and using marked letters to fill in the blank spaces and answer the clue, which is usually a pun.

As of 2013, Jumble, That Scrambled Word Game, is owned and distributed by Tribune Content Agency, and appears in more than 600 daily newspapers around the world. The game is also available in Jumble books, on mobile applications and online.
