The line a darts player stands behind to throw their darts is called the throw line. The throw line measures 96 inches from the face of the dartboard. According to the NDA rules, dart players may throw the dart while leaning over the line, as long as they are not stepping over the line.
In the international darts rule book, as well as in British dart competitions, the throw line is called an "oche." The true origins of the word is unknown. Oche was first used to refer to the throw line in the 1920s, and it was originally spelled as "hockey." It wasn't until the late 1970s that people began spelling it as oche.
