A simple pattern used to create a superhero cape requires a few yards of fabric, matching thread, Velcro and a clothing iron. For a child, cut the fabric into two 31-inch pieces, or measure it to suit the height of an adult.
Lay the two pieces of fabric on top of each other, and fold them in half. For a child, mark one end of the fabric with chalk at 11 inches while marking the other end at 5 1/2 inches. For an adult, the marking is proportionate to the length of the cape. Mark a line using a measuring tape that stretches from one mark to the other. Cut the fabric 1/5 inch outside the line.
Use a round bowl with an 8-inch diameter to mark the neck on the narrow end. Trace the bowl from one edge to another, leaving 4 inches for the neck straps. Cut the fabric 1/2 inch away from the marking. You can round the ends of the cape and neck straps.
After unfolding the fabric, sew the two pieces of fabric using a back stitch about 1/2 inch from the edges. Leave a 2-inch opening at the bottom of the cape so the fabric can be turned right-side out, and then hand sew it after ironing the edges flat. Finally, sew two small Velcro squares onto the ends of the neck straps for easy closure.
