What are Topps basketball cards?

Topps is a company that produces trading cards for many sports, including basketball. Basketball trading cards feature a picture of a basketball player, a short biography, and statistics.

Topps Chewing Gum Inc. was created in 1938 by brothers Abram, Ira, Joseph, and Philip Shorin in Brooklyn, N.Y. Their goal was to revive their father's struggling tobacco distribution company by selling penny candy. In 1949, they began including free photo cards inside the packs of gum, some depicting baseball players. These cards inspired the selling of baseball trading cards in 1951, which included the gum in the packages. Trading cards for basketball were brought into production in 1957.
