Rhubarb plants can be grown in a container as long as the plant has a deep root system, enough to hold 40 liters of compost, according to Thompson & Morgan. Rhubarb needs a soil-based compost.

Thompson & Morgan also states that rhubarb plants should be planted in the spring or fall, depending on variety. Healthy plants keep producing for 10 years or more. Rhubarb should have crowns or budded pieces planted. Crowns are 1-year-old plants that produce the first year planted, while budded pieces are portions of crowns that produce for two years after being planted, according to Thompson & Morgan.
