Where can I plant rhubarb?

Rhubarb grows best in moist, well-drained soil in a sunny location. Prepare the soil by digging in well-rotted manure to a depth of about 24 inches.

Rhubarb can be planted from seed, but most gardeners prefer to start from rhubarb crowns because they are easier to establish and yield edible stalks sooner. Set the crowns so that the top of the bud sits about an inch under the soil level. Rhubarb plants grow quite large, so leave 30 inches of space between crowns. Do not harvest the stalks the first year. In the second year, harvest the stalks from April to June, after the leaves have fully unfurled. Pinch back flowers in the spring to encourage stalk growth. Do not eat rhubarb leaves; they can be toxic.
