To paint a metal door, lay it flat, cover the hardware with masking tape, wipe the door with mineral spirits, sand it, wash it, prime and paint it, unmask the hardware, and hang the door. This six-hour process requires masking tape, mineral spirits, rags, sandpaper, a bucket, water, soap, primer, paint, a paint roller and a paintbrush.
- Prepare the door
Lay the door on a flat surface, and cover the hardware with masking tape.
- Clean and sand the door
Wipe the door with a rag soaked in mineral spirits, and wait for the spirits to dry. Lightly sand the door, and wash it with a solution of water and liquid soap. Rinse with water, and dry the door with a rag.
- Prime the door
Use a roller to cover the door with primer, and use a paintbrush to neaten the edges and recessed areas. Wait for the primer to dry according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- Apply two coats of paint
Apply a coat of paint with a roller, and smooth the edges with a brush. Cover the front and edges of the door, including those portions that are invisible when the door is closed. Let the paint dry for the amount of time indicated on the can, and then apply a second coat.
- Unmask and hang the door
Remove the masking tape, and hang the door on its hinges.
