How do you spray paint metal?

Spray paint metal by cleaning the object with a wire brush, applying a primer, and then adding two thin coats of spray paint using smooth back-and-forth movements about 10 inches away from the object. Wear a mask to avoid breathing in fumes, and wear gloves to protect your hands.
- Prepare yourself and your work area
Put on a protective face mask and a pair of gloves. Open a window for ventilation, or spray paint outside. Cover your work surface with a drop cloth or newspapers.
- Clean the object
Scrub the metal with a wire-bristled brush. Wipe away dust with a damp cloth. Let the object air dry.
- Apply primer
Apply a spray primer made for metal surfaces to the object. Shake the can well, and apply by depressing the nozzle and moving the can back and forth about 10 inches from the surface. Let the primer dry for one hour.
- Mix the paint well
Shake the can of spray paint for two minutes to thoroughly combine the pigments and the paint medium.
- Apply the paint
Depress the nozzle of the spray can, and apply the paint in a thin coat using a smooth, continuous motion. Keep the nozzle 10 to 12 inches from the object. Let the paint dry for three hours.
- Add a second coat
Apply a second coat just like the first. Let the object dry for three hours before moving or using it.
