What home remedies are there for damaged hair?

Various home remedies can help treat damaged hair, including raw eggs, lemon juice, sour cream, cornmeal, avocado, honey and beer. The type of home remedy varies according to the type of damage to the hair.

The following are a few examples of home remedies and the kind of hair damage that they can help treat. These remedies may provide similar or better results than commercial hair care products.

• Raw eggs - This conditioning treatment is for most types of hair. The egg white works well on oily hair, while the yolk helps moisturize dry and brittle hair. To use, apply whichever part of the egg is appropriate for the hair. Leave in for 20 minutes, rinse off and then shampoo the hair. This treatment is used every 2 weeks.
• Honey - Hair damaged by the sun or other elements that make it dry often responds well to honey treatment. Massage half a cup of honey into damp hair and rinse off after 20 minutes. Use with olive oil for easier application and with egg yolk for better results. Use this treatment once a month.
• Beer - While this treatment may seem odd, beer works well to help add bounce to fine or limp hair. Mix half a cup of flat beer with 1 teaspoon of canola or sunflower oil and one raw egg. To make the beer flat, pour it into an open container for 2 hours. Apply the mixture to clean damp hair and leave for 15 minutes before rinsing off. Use this treatment every other week.
