There is a special section of the Department of Housing and Urban Development, or HUD, for senior residents, called the Housing for Older Persons Act, or HOPA. This act was passed in 1995 to help seniors find affordable housing.
The government has strict guidelines for HOPA senior housing. The person occupying the home must be 62 years old or older, and if other people are in the home, at least one of them must be 55 years old or older. Applicants must also demonstrate a financial need for housing assistance. HOPA is available for renting homes and purchasing homes. It is an extension of HUD, which is primarily for individuals and families of all ages.
