What is the Hupa Indian village's religion?

The Hupa Indians did not practice any of the traditional religions. They participated in the World Renewal ceremonies. These ceremonies involved shamans who performed secret rites and dances such as the White Deerskin Dance and the Jumping Dance.

The Hupa Indians held these ritual ceremonies to honor their history and demonstrate activities of the supernaturals who were central to their belief system. Among their tribe were female curing shamans who charged very high fees to suck illness out of a sick tribe member's body. The male shamans or sorcerers were believed to have powers to harm others with their sorcery.
