Hydrofluoric acid is a toxic substance used in the manufacture of refined oil, Teflon, metallic aluminum and cleaning products. It is denoted by the chemical formula HF, indicating that each molecule of hydrofluoric acid contains one atom of hydrogen and one atom of fluorine.
Hydrofluoric acid is defined as a weak acid, as seen from its pKa value of 3.17. It can be produced through the reaction between calcium fluoride and sulfuric acid. It can also be produced from an aqueous solution of hydrogen fluoride and water. Hydrofluoric acid also goes by the names fluoric acid and fluorhydric acid. Hydorfluoric acid is very corrosive.
