There are no legally operating ibogaine treatment centers in the United States, where ibogaine is a Schedule I controlled substance, according to Common Sense for Drug Policy. Ibogaine is a hallucinogenic drug that anecdotal evidence suggests may reduce cravings for alcohol, opiates, cocaine and other drugs.
Early research suggests that ibogaine may have applications in treating alcohol addiction, according to WebMD. The drug appears to boost chemicals in the brain that are linked to addiction. Due to hallucinations and other side affects, as well as the lack of clinical research in human trials, researchers do not currently recommend ibogaine for use in treating addiction, as of 2015.
