When was ice hockey invented?

The modern game of ice hockey was introduced in 1875. The first team was organized by James Creighton in Canada.

Various games that took place on ice date back to the 1600s, but did not resemble hockey as it is known today. Games with balls and sticks that were not played on ice date back to 400 B.C.

The official game rules for hockey were put in place in 1877. The sport was created in Montreal and quickly rose in popularity. The first college hockey team was created in 1877.

The National Hockey League was founded in 1917. As of 2015, the NHL includes 30 professional teams from Canada and the United States.
