The basic bread mold science experiment details the changes in a slice of bread as mold begins to form. To conduct this basic experiment, place several slices of bread into identical containers or Ziploc bags. Put the containers in several locations with different lighting and temperatures. Mark the changes daily.

Variants of the experiment involve adding moisture to some of the containers of bread while others use dry bread stored under refrigeration. Different types of mold grow at different temperatures and in different moisture levels.

Mold spores look like small black dots as they begin to form on the bread. The spores develop into the white, fuzzy patches of mold that grow on bread.
