The iliotibial band is a band of fibers that stretches from the iliac crest to the pelvis. This band runs along the outside of the thigh and connects to the tibia. Muscles from the buttocks and hip joint also attach to the iliotibial band.
The iliotibial band coordinates muscle function during walking and running. This connective fiber band also stabilizes the knees during running. The band often becomes inflamed in people who run many miles per day. When inflamed, the patient is said to have iliotibial band syndrome. This syndrome is very common in athletes and runners; without treatment, it and can hinder their ability to run quickly and easily.
